A Wild Encounter in Jackson Hole

August 7, 2021

The majestic landscape of Jackson Hole, Wyoming served as the backdrop for our summer adventure as we hiked from the base to the summit on a pristine August day. Just 24 hours earlier, I'd had an extraordinary wildlife photography opportunity that still had my creative juices flowing.

While exploring Jenny Lake Trail the previous day, commotion erupted ahead as hikers hastily retreated from the path. The cause of their concern soon became apparent—a mama bear with two cubs had wandered near the trail. As fellow hikers backed away with urgent whispers about safety, my photographer's instinct took over.

With my Sony a7rIII equipped with a 24-240mm lens, I carefully maneuvered forward. Despite the concerned glances and occasional comment questioning my judgment, I maintained a respectful distance while capturing images of the magnificent creature on the hillside above us. The encounter was exhilarating, if admittedly unorthodox.

But today's wildlife story features a much smaller, though equally charismatic resident of these mountains.

During our descent, we encountered a charming chipmunk I immediately dubbed "Rock Star." Unlike yesterday's bears, this diminutive subject seemed to welcome the attention. The little performer posed confidently atop a boulder, displaying perfect composure as I framed several shots. After graciously modeling for a few minutes, Rock Star gave what I could swear was a final nod before disappearing back into the rocky crevice that served as home. Another example of right place, right time-for a fleeting moment.

While perhaps less imposing than a bear, this small mountain resident brought its own brand of magic to our Jackson Hole adventure—proving that sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters come in the smallest packages.
